What It Is

Oxygen, Not Bleach

Vintage Textile Soak works the way careful textile conservators have worked for generations: with oxygen. When the powder dissolves in warm water, it releases active oxygen that lifts decades of yellowing, storage stains, and dinginess out of the fibers themselves — gently, over hours, not with the harshness of chlorine.

There's no chlorine bleach in this pouch. No phosphates, no dyes, no fragrance. Just three straightforward mineral ingredients doing patient work — which is exactly what a quilt that survived eighty years deserves.

Ingredients — All Three of Them

Sodium Percarbonate — the oxygen source. Sodium Carbonate — softens the water so the oxygen can do its job. Sodium Bicarbonate — buffers the soak to keep it gentle on old fibers.

That's the whole list. It's printed on every pouch, because a product this simple has nothing to hide.

The Soak, Step by Step

Test First

Check for colorfastness on a hidden corner. Old dyes have opinions — thirty seconds of testing protects a century of fabric.

Dissolve

One scoop (60 mL) per gallon of warm water. The included scoop takes the guesswork out.
III

Submerge & Wait

Let the textile soak 4–12 hours. Heavy stains earn an overnight stay. The oxygen works while you don't.
IV

Rinse Clear

Rinse until the water runs completely clear — that's the lifted grime leaving for good.
V

Dry Flat

Away from heat and direct sunlight. Patience got the stains out; patience finishes the job.

Before You Soak

How many soaks are in one pouch?

A 1 lb pouch holds roughly 7–8 scoops. A washtub soak for a single quilt typically uses 4–5 gallons of water — so one pouch covers one to two full quilt restorations, or many smaller pieces like linens and gowns.

Will it damage my vintage quilt?

It was designed for vintage quilts. Oxygen-based cleaning is the gentle end of the spectrum — no chlorine, no optical brighteners, no fragrance residue left in the fibers. That said, always run the colorfastness test first: some antique dyes predate modern dye-setting and can migrate in any soak, no matter how gentle.

Why "not in an airtight glass container"?

The active ingredient releases a small amount of oxygen over time — it's the same property that makes it work. In a sealed rigid container, that oxygen has nowhere to go. Keep it in the resealable pouch it came in, tightly closed, in a cool dry place, and it stays happy.

How is this different from the big-box oxygen cleaners?

The chemistry family is related — but the formulation is ours, blended for delicate, aged natural fibers rather than gym socks. No fillers, no fragrance, no dyes, and a buffered blend that keeps the soak gentle over the long hours vintage textiles need. Plus it's blended, packed, and lot-traced in small batches right here in Jefferson City.

Is it safe around kids and pets?

Like any cleaning product, it should be stored out of reach of children and pets, and the soak water isn't for splashing in. The full caution and first-aid details are printed on every pouch. Once a textile is rinsed clear and dried, no active residue remains in the fabric.

Can I use it in my washing machine?

It's built as a soak, not a detergent — the long, still bath is where it shines. For sturdy everyday cottons you can add a scoop to a machine soak cycle, but heirloom pieces deserve the washtub treatment and a flat dry.

James & Sue — founders and operators of Countryside General Stores, LLC — got tired of buying so-called "vintage soaks" from retailer after retailer and watching them fall short. Quilt restoration asks for something most products can't deliver: tough enough to lift a century of stains, gentle enough to never harm a lifelong heirloom. When they couldn't find it, they made it.

Countryside Quilts® Vintage Textile Soak is blended right here in the middle of the United States — and that matters more than it sounds. Missouri quilts survive it all: the heat, the humidity, the farmhouse dirt, decades of old cigarette smoke, just to name a few. The textiles that come through our shop door are the hardest cases this country produces, and this soak was built against them.

We're asking you to trust it with your grandmother's quilt — so you deserve to know that we trust it with ours, and with the hundreds of customers' quilts that come through our door asking for help. Every pouch carries a lot number and best-by date written on the back. That's not fine print; that's the proof.
